Welcoming 250 new AmeriCorps members to the National Service family in West Virginia!
Today in Charleston, WV, more
than 250 AmeriCorps members joined the national service family at a statewide
AmeriCorps Opening Day celebration. These members will serve with
AmeriCorps programs across the Mountain State to meet critical needs in the
areas of education, health, the environment, disaster services, veteran
services, and economic opportunity. Kay Goodwin, West Virginia Secretary for Education
and Arts, administered the AmeriCorps pledge.
Since 1994, more than 11,000 West Virginia residents have served more
than 17 million hours through AmeriCorps. This year West Virginia ranked
Top 5 in the nation for producing AmeriCorps members. Each year nearly 800
individuals serve as AmeriCorps members in West Virginia. Many serve in
their hometowns, while others come from across the country to make West
Virginia their home for the year. National service expands economic opportunity
by creating more sustainable, resilient communities and providing experience,
career skills, and college. We look forward to the positive impact these
AmeriCorps members will have on West Virginia communities. Thank you to
Volunteer West Virginia and the CNCS State Office for hosting such an inspiring
event!
