These members will serve with 12 AmeriCorps programs across the state of Vermont to meet critical needs in the areas of education, health, the environment, disaster services, veteran services, and economic opportunity. Today in Phoenix, AZ, CNCS board member Mona Dixon will recognize 50+ local AmeriCorps members. These members serve with AmeriCorps programs throughout Greater Phoenix to meet critical needs in the areas of education, health, the environment, veteran services, and economic opportunity. We are excited about the positive impact they will have on our local Arizona communities. Welcoming 250 new AmeriCorps members to the National Service family in West Virginia!

Today in Charleston, WV, more than 250 AmeriCorps members joined the national service family at a statewide AmeriCorps Opening Day celebration.  These members will serve with AmeriCorps programs across the Mountain State to meet critical needs in the areas of education, health, the environment, disaster services, veteran services, and economic opportunity. Kay Goodwin, West Virginia Secretary for Education and Arts, administered the AmeriCorps pledge. 

Since 1994, more than 11,000 West Virginia residents have served more than 17 million hours through AmeriCorps.  This year West Virginia ranked Top 5 in the nation for producing AmeriCorps members. Each year nearly 800 individuals serve as AmeriCorps members in West Virginia.  Many serve in their hometowns, while others come from across the country to make West Virginia their home for the year. National service expands economic opportunity by creating more sustainable, resilient communities and providing experience, career skills, and college.  We look forward to the positive impact these AmeriCorps members will have on West Virginia communities. #VISTA50 Puerto Rico

On October 6, 2015, the AmeriCorps VISTA 50th Anniversary Puerto Rico event took place at the Technology & Science Center in the Municipality of Caguas. Among the over 140 participants were AmeriCorps VISTA members, AmeriCorps members, Senior Corps, AmeriCorps Alums, supervisors, local government and foundations.

The general session consisted of a panel “Poverty in Puerto Rico: Realities and Perspectives.” The Panel included:

• Dr. Luis Benitez, Director of the State Planning Board, Social Sector
  
• Anitza Cox Esq., Senior Research Associate, Estudios Tecnicos, Inc. and NGO Professor
  
• Dr. Norma Rodríguez, Former Dean Social Studies School, University of Puerto Rico and author of a book on poverty in PR
  
• Olga Bernardy-PhD, Professor University of Puerto Rico and former Deputy State Director Department of Family-PR

Since 1965, AmeriCorps VISTA has engaged citizens to alleviate poverty in the United States. 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of this ground-breaking national service program.
