


Welcoming newest AmeriCorps members to the National Service family in New Mexico!
The Nenahnezad Chapter of the Navajo Nation received an AmeriCorps grant this fall to support AmeriCorps members working on youth wellness and community health. Today the Chapter celebrated AmeriCorps Opening Day. The Chapter’s AmeriCorps members focus on health and wellness by promoting physical activity and organizing activities for youth and community members. They help meet nutrition, fitness, and educational needs of youth and families by distributing food supplies, facilitating wellness classes, hosting nutrition and physical fitness classes. They will also be working this year to renovate a walking and bike path for use by community members.

Today in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, we welcome the newest class of AmeriCorps members to the national service family. These members will tutor and mentor children, support veterans and military families, provide health services, restore the environment, increase economic opportunity, and recruit and manage volunteers. Since 1994, more than 43,000 Pennsylvania residents have served more than 57 million hours.

In the 2015-2016 program year, 500 AmeriCorps members are serving in 10 AmeriCorps State programs to Get Things Done for Mississippi. They are serving in schools and after-school programs as tutors and mentors, providing resources and nutritional education to address food security issues and healthy living lifestyles, cultivating school gardens, rehabilitating affordable homes, and connecting veterans and family members of active military personnel to available resources. Members create lasting change by recruiting local leaders and volunteers, and training them to enact change in their own neighborhoods.
