Vets Helping Vets: WWII, Vietnam Vet Bond Over Shared Experience

World War II veteran Art Schultz lost his eye and his arm in the Normandy campaign, but never his joy for life. Steve Vradenburg, a Vietnam vet, serves as Art’s Senior Companion volunteer. Together, they have built a great friendship that makes all the difference.

It has been said that the strength of our communities is determined by how we help our most vulnerable citizens. For 40 years, Senior Companions have positively impacted thousands of lives. The friendship and interdependence between the client and Senior Companion is the bridge that keeps them both strong and connected to the community. This year, the Senior Corps Senior Companions program celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Senior Corps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

President Obama’s recent trip to Arkansas after last week’s deadly tornadoes and storms.

President Obama recently traveled to central Arkansas for a first hand look at the area affected by last week’s tornadoes and storms. The President spoke to survivors, first responders, and recovery workers.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has deployed hundreds of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members in response to the severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that have swept through the central and southern U.S.

In Arkansas, five AmeriCorps members deployed from Red Cross are providing client casework services. Three teams of FEMA Corps members are supporting FEMA operations.
