Two AmeriCorps alums were among the 2014 Teachers of the Year honored by President Obama today for their dedication each and every day in the classroom.  Katie Day Brown, an English Language Learner specialist at Shuksan Middle School in Bellingham, Washington, is 2014 Washington State Teacher of the Year.  Katie served as an AmeriCorps VISTA in Juneau, Alaska in 2000, working with the Tlingit and Haida Native American tribes to improve adolescent health by building a physical activity program for native youth that promoted health and cultural development.  Her AmeriCorps experience helping tribal youth learn about and embrace their culture was a critical influence that led Katie to pursue a career as a teacher.  Jonathan Crossley, a Teach for America AmeriCorps alum, is the 2014 Arkansas Teacher of the Year.  He is an English language arts teacher at Palestine Wheatley High School in St. Francis County.
