Dallas Morning News columnist Steve Blow finds some everyday heroes in his latest dispatch about the Senior Medicare Patrol in Texas based on their work to stop Medicare fraud in the state. And RSVP volunteer Richard Hotinski, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and auditor of state agencies with 15 years of experience, was a natural fit for the project.
Medicare fraud costs the system $60 billion annually, and Senior Medicare Patrols are looking for red flags in bills that signal systematic abuses. During Senior Corps Week, we salute the RSVP programs and volunteers across the nation that are playing important roles in this effort to root out fraudulent claims. Hotinski performs his duties with an eye toward the future: “We all say we love our grandchildren. Well, we may enjoy Medicare, but they may not. We seniors can’t keep blowing wads and wads of money.”
