STEM AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Projects in Action Across South
This summer, STEM AmeriCorps is taking on a new challenge as 256 AmeriCorps VISTAs fan out across six Southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and West Virginia) to connect 18,000 students in low-performing schools with learning opportunities. As expected, reports from the field about the program are filling our inboxes.
Students are being encouraged to learn through a variety of hands-on techniques led by our VISTA Summer Associates and community participants who are sharing their enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and math topics. Some are building robots, some are exploring career opportunities by becoming a “Scientist for a day,” and others are learning about food production or trying their hand at computer programming.
The photos above were provided by the Heart of Florida United Way Together For Tomorrow VISTA Project where Dr. Lester Morales from the Kennedy Space Center led a training session with VISTA Summer Associates on curriculum for summer learning as well as during the school session.  VISTA hopes to build connections with NASA specialists around the country to provide similar educational opportunities at other projects.
STEM education is drawing a lot of interest lately, energized by the recent White House Science Fair and Maker Faire. The STEM AmeriCorps summer program is an expansion of current CNCS initiatives and partnerships, such as the Maker Education Initiative, that will engage tens of thousands in STEM learning and encourage students in underserved urban and rural areas to explore careers in these disciplines.
