8 TV Characters Who Would Make Great AmeriCorps Members

By Kathleen Collins

OK, not her. But these other small-screen icons have the skills and personality traits that would make them perfect for national service.

1. Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation)

Leslie’s hardworking spirit and passion for strengthening the Pawnee community would make her a great AmeriCorps member. We can envision her on an AmeriCorps NCCC team, helping to build parks in small communities. (To get an idea of Leslie’s optimistic attitude, check out her website.)

2. Dr. Greg House (House)

Yes, he’s very cynical and sometimes bitter, but you can’t deny that House is a great doctor. Somehow, he pretty much always solves every problem that his patients have. His medical expertise would be useful as a member of Community Health Corps, where he could help disadvantaged communities gain better health care. Maybe working with AmeriCorps would make him a little more positive.

3. Jess Day (New Girl)

Jess’s love of kids and experience as a teacher makes her perfect for the School Turnaround AmeriCorps program. She could work one-on-one with students in disadvantaged communities, helping get them on track to a high school graduation.

4. Dwight Schrute (The Office)

Of his many useful skills, Dwight’s vast knowledge of beet farming would probably come most in handy. As an AmeriCorps NCCC member, he could teach communities the ins and outs of sustainable farming, giving them the necessary skills to grow their own food. According to the Schrute Farms Trip Adviser page, Dwight manages his farm really well; AmeriCorps NCCC could use someone like him.

5. SpongeBob (SpongeBob Squarepants)

SpongeBob’s optimistic nature and unwavering can-do attitude are the qualities AmeriCorps is looking for. He could help out his community by assisting with ocean and beach cleanup, making Bikini Bottom a happier and cleaner place.

6. Alicia Florrick (The Good Wife)

As an experienced lawyer, Alicia would be great as an attorney for the new justice AmeriCorps program. She would help unsupervised immigrant children get the legal aid they need.

7. Jon Snow (Game of Thrones)

As a dedicated member of the night’s watch, Jon has a lot of experience with reacting to emergency situations. He would fit in well with FEMA Corps, quickly responding to disasters throughout the country. He is highly motivated and loyal, making him a great prospect.

8. Lisa Simpson (The Simpsons)

Lisa is very ambitious and clearly wants to play a part in improving the world around her. Her intelligence and organizational skills would be useful as an AmeriCorps VISTA, where she could take the lead on a project to promote economic development and fight poverty.
